Speed Secret #17: Triple Threat

Winning Pinewood Derby Secrets
Only a few microseconds separates winners from everyone else in the pack...
You can win if you have ALL of the speed secrets. You can search for tips in the internet or pick up a few speed tips from friends, but to win, you need ALL the secrets.
Some of the speed tips in our book can't be found anywhere else. How do I know? Because as an engineer, I invented new speed techniques and every one of my speed tips have been tested on my own track.
So, here is one of my favorite hints (this one was not invented by me). It won't win the race for you, but it gives you an example of one of the things you can do to increase speed.
Two "key" things slow your car; friction and inertia. In our Speed section titled Race Winning Secrets, we tell you how to eliminate a source of Friction and Inertia by lifting one of the front wheels so it doesn't touch the track at all. Your car is rolling on only three wheels, thereby eliminating friction from one wheel, along with the Inertia required to get that wheel turning. Yes, the friction is re-distributed to the other three wheels but the friction from the lifted wheel has been eliminated and adding lubricant, such as graphite, reduces friction from the other three wheels.
We even performed controlled experiments to prove that this technique works to reduce your track times.

Pinewood Derby Car Stand
We made a simple stand out of three pieces of wood (pictured below), a 1"x3" for the base, a 2"x4" for the upright and a 1"x2" for the top to hold the car. This stand only required one angle cut in the 2"x4" do the car mounted at an angle.
This only requires four screws, two on the bottom and two on the top.

Click on the link under the driver's license to display the Word doc. You can then save it on your PC and edit the fields to customize it for your race, as follows:
Change "CT" in the dark blue Driver License block to your state code
Change the "hgt" to the racers actual height, or make it blank and let them fill it in.
Change the "eyes" to the driver's eye color, or let them fill it in
Ask the racer to sign their license when they check in their pinewood derby car
You can also hand out the license with their car kit. This gives each racer time to fill in their license and add their photo to the lower right corner!
While it is nice to get a ribbon or trophy for winning a pinewood derby race, it is also nice to get personal award.
We hope you like our award certificates...they are in Word format, so you can edit them to enter the winner's name, Pack and Den.

Tips & Hints
Make your car slim. If your car is too chunky, there will be lots of weight in the wood, leaving less weight for your weights. You want lots of weight so you can move the center of gravity to the optimal point to maximize inertia.
Many of the BSA "nails" that come in your kit are crooked. Chuck each axle in your drill and spin them. If the axle looks blurry as it spins, that axle is crooked. Replace crooked axles or consider getting an Axle Press Tool to straighten crooked axles.
Nyoil stays on your axles throughout the race, unlike powdered graphite that blows off every time your car goes down the track. This gives Nyoil coated axles a speed advantage if your car keeps racing.
My son, won his pack derby today on our first attempt! He won 9 races in a row and none of them were even close. Thanks for your assist in this father & son memory.
- Kevin from VT
My son won 1st place for the fastest car. Thank you for all of your tips and tricks they were a big help.
Great tips in your Winning Secrets book! This was our first year and my son was the overall District Winner. There were 250 racers at the District race so I'm guessing we have something like 1,000 scouts in our district. With that type of competition you need these tips to be competitive.
- Mike from FL
We won every race we entered as well as the grand prize for the fastest car! Thanks for your help and interest.
Your tips were Fabulous! Competing in the District Race tomorrow...Our first time making a car! You ROCK!!!!

You people offer the very finest support and equipment for Pinewood derby cars on the planet! We went undefeated for the second year in a row. Cheers!
This is my son's first Derby car as a Tiger Cub Scout. We had a lot of fun working on this together. Even though he didn't place it was a rewarding experience. Next year we plan to build something even more unique and perhaps a little more challenging. Thanks for a great web site!
- Shawn from CA
Hey Joe- Just wanted to pass on the good news- and a few nice pix. We ended up in 2nd place out of 63 cars racing. Not too bad, and we'll be at district in a few weeks.
