Free Secret Speed Tips

Speed Secret #17: Triple Threat

This one speed tip won't make you a winner... but the full set of over 40 in our #1 best seller
Winning Pinewood Derby Secrets
will!

Only a few microseconds separates winners from everyone else in the pack...

You can win if you have ALL of the speed secrets. You can search for tips in the internet or pick up a few speed tips from friends, but to win, you need ALL the secrets.

Some of the speed tips in our book can't be found anywhere else. How do I know? Because as an engineer, I invented new speed techniques and every one of my speed tips have been tested on my own track.

So, here is one of my favorite hints (this one was not invented by me). It won't win the race for you, but it gives you an example of one of the things you can do to increase speed.

How to raise a pinewood derby wheel and why!

Two "key" things slow your car; friction and inertia. In our Speed section titled Race Winning Secrets, we tell you how to eliminate a source of Friction and Inertia by lifting one of the front wheels so it doesn't touch the track at all. Your car is rolling on only three wheels, thereby eliminating friction from one wheel, along with the Inertia required to get that wheel turning. Yes, the friction is re-distributed to the other three wheels but the friction from the lifted wheel has been eliminated and adding lubricant, such as graphite, reduces friction from the other three wheels.

We even performed controlled experiments to prove that raising a wheel works to increase car speed.

Here is how to raise a pinewood derby wheel:

  1. Drill a new axle hole about 1/8" above the left or right front wheel axle slot.
  2. Insert your axle with your wheel into this new axle hole.
  3. Done. Your car will roll just fine on 3 wheels!
Important Note: Be sure to read your race rules! If your rules say "All wheels must touch the track, then you cannot use this technique."

Speed Secret #19: Rail Riding

Here is another free hint: Make your car into a rail rider. What's all the buzz about rail riding? What do you need to make a rail rider and how do you make a Rail Riding pinewood derby car? It is NOT for everyone, so be careful before you attempt to do this! Our free Guide tells you exactly How to Make Rail Rider® car.

Complete details with clear illustrations show you all the ways to increase your car's speed in Winning Pinewood Derby Secrets.

Pinewood Derby Car Stand

We made a simple stand out of three pieces of wood (pictured below), a 1"x3" for the base, a 2"x4" for the upright and a 1"x2" for the top to hold the car. This stand only required one angle cut in the 2"x4" do the car mounted at an angle.

This only requires four screws, two on the bottom and two on the top.

      Tips & Hints

Lighter wheels turn easier (they require less inertia). Lighten your wheels, as much as your Rules allow, which will give you a fast start out of the gate and faster speed down the track.

      Pinewood Derby
      axles Tip

When your wheel rubs against the axle head it creates friction. To reduce this friction, file the head back slightly using an Axle File to reduce the friction area.
