Pinewood Pro’s 1.5° steering axle starts as the BSA Pinewood Derby axle from the official kit. We then lathe it to become one of our Polished BSA Pinewood Derby Axle and then we add these additional upgrades:
1.5 degree shaft bend for straight steering. More on that below!
Angled underside of the axle head to reduce wheel contact friction
Slotted head to easily turn the axle with a screwdriver
Why use a bent steering axle?
Simply put: Cars that roll straight win races! Straight steering is a critical speed adjustment and can often be both difficult and time consuming to get right.
A bent axle helps the car to roll straight, and only needs to be turned a few degrees to change the steering. A bigger bend makes smaller adjustments nearly impossible.
You can also use this axle to build a rail rider car!
How do I install a bent steering axle?
Replace your front right axle with the BSA Steering Axle
Place your car on a slight incline to observe its steering direction
Turn the Steering Axle slightly with a screwdriver to guide your car left or right until it rolls straight for 6 to 8 feet
PRO Tip: You cannot see a 1.5 degree bend with the naked eye! You’ll notice the difference by rolling the axle across a flat surface.
