"The step by step helps but there is a lot of detail work. This is not a quick 2 hour build, this was 2 hours with my son and than 2 more after he went to bed, than 2 more the next day just to get it ready for paint. If you are good at working with wood and want a really cool car this is it. If you want quick and easy or you want your son to do most of it himself pick a different car."

VERY difficult to create..
I have no problem with the design or the concept or instructions, however, I consulted my father in law (retiree from General Motors) and after a few hours we concluded that 80% of the die makers at GM could not complete this model properly. It is a ton of sawing and sanding and we did not finish.

Spongebob Car
The templates are great once you get them printed in the correct size. Steps 6-14, I found it very difficult to make anything close to a precise cut with a coping saw. I had to go to a friends house and do the rough cuts with his band saw. This was much easier and took much less time. I didn't even try the chisel for shaping the car. I just bought a Dremel and it was worth it. The carving wasn't too difficult with the Dremel tool. Of course, as others have also mentioned, a child can not do many of these steps alone and some not at all. The only issue that I had was being able to tell which parts were coming up from the car and which were supposed to be cut into the wood. Mostly this was with steps 19 and 20 regarding the smile. I cut it one way, then my wife came over and said she thought it was the other way (lol), I couldn't really tell so I altered it. Not sure it was correct as far as the directions are concerned, but it turned out well anyway. My son had the coolest car there. We added weights to the bottom and he came in 9th out of 40 kids. I didn't really expect it to be a very fast car because of the bulk of wood. As this was our 1st attempt at a pinewood derby car, I found it a little difficult to get the wheels on correctly. They all were slightly tilted. I took one off to adjust and it broke part of the wood off. We glued it back on, but I'm not really sure about the best way to hammer the wheels on? Just be careful and don't try to fix it if you mess up. Overall, this product is totally worth $5!

Not easy
My son was so excited to do this. I thought I read that it was easy or at the very least, doable. Not for a non-woodworker. We scrubbed this idea and will just paint spongebob on his car.

Go Spongebob
Was pretty easy to construct. Did not do all the specifications for it. Some of the details were just painted. But Levi won best in the Pack. Yay!!!

SpongeBob wins again!
What a cool looking car...and very fast, too. My son's car won out of 22 cars in his Webelos class. He may very well also win the top design in his Pack. The winner will be announced at our Blue & Gold Banquet next month. Amazing!

SpongeBob Pinewood Derby Car Kit
Won first place for Best Design / Detail. We added pants and blue wiggly eyes to the design. It wasn't the fastest car, but it was a hit with all the boys and parents at the Derby.

SpongeBob Derby Car
This was a fun project. It looked great and everyone loved it. The design resulted in a fast car and a 2nd place trophy ! You really need a dremel with this design. Highly recommended.

SpongeBob - Third Place in speed race
With a dremel, this design was fairly easy. Our 8 year old did most of the work himself. We masking taped areas to make the paint job a breeze for him.
