Gravity moves your car down the track... To make your car go fast, you must bring it up to the 5 oz weight limit to be competitive. Use our convenient weight sets to get the exact weight you need. Most cars need 2 to 3 oz of weight, depending on your car design.
Barrel Weights Two .75 oz zinc bars (1.5 oz total weight) Barrel weights are inserted into the back of your car. Just drill a 3/8" hole in the back of the block, break off the exact amount of weight you need, slide them in and cover the hole with wood putty. Each barrel segment weighs approximately .25oz. Each bar (3 barrels) weighs .75oz and the set of two bars weighs a total of 1.5oz. Tungsten Weights
Why use Tungsten??? Tungsten gives you an advantage because it is about 1.8 times denser than lead... which means tungsten is about half the size for the same weight. Since pinewood derby cars are so small it is important to place weight exactly where you need it. The single tungsten cyclinder on top (.5oz) weighs nearly the same as the three zinc cyclinders (.75oz) on the bottom. This gives you more flexibilty in your car design, because you can place weights more precisely in a smaller area for speed.
