Getting your pinewood derby car to steer straight is a critical speed adjustment and it is the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of building a pinewood derby car.
If your car doesn't steer straight, your wheels hit the guide rails, causing your car to lose valuable speed.
The PRO Steering Axle is made from a PRO Super Speed grooved and nickel plated axle. To use the steering axle, just replace one of your front axles with the PRO Steering Axle and gently turn the axle with a screw driver to make that wheel steer left or right until your car rolls straight for 6 to 8 feet.
It’s as easy as that!
You can also use the steering axle to create a Rail Rider car, which is a technique we only recommend for experienced car builders who have a test track.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You can not see a 1.5 degree bend with the naked eye!
Just roll a non-bent axle on a flat surface, and roll our bent axle on a flat surface and you will see that the bent axle doesn't roll as smoothly.
Why is the bend only 1.5 degrees? ...because your axle only needs to be turned a few degrees to change the steering. A bigger bend will make it impossible to make the small steering adjustment that you need!

steering axle
I built two cars with one of these on each car. The #1 car had lighter wheels and the #2 car had standard wheels. I think #2 would have gotten my Son the same position in the pack but with the lighter wheels, this axle and the 2.5 degree axles on the back, he got 1st place in the pack. Happy Scout!

Good Axle
The axels ran well and it was easy to tune our car. I planned on running on three wheels, but when my son dropped his car right after weigh in, we had no choice. Good thing we had it set with these axles. 2nd overall in a very competitive group!

My son was the champ of the derby. I don't know if it was because of the bent axle or not but I know it contributed.
